If I get a learner’s permit for driving, will I have to pay for insurance?
My Parents have two cars and both are covered. If their cars are already covered, will a learner’s permit effect our rates? I would really appreciate an answer.
A learner’s permit will not affect your rates because you will be covered under your parents auto policy were you to drive any of your parents cars because it is required that you have an adult with a valid drivers license as a passenger when you are driving with a leaner’s permit and the adult doesn’t have to be either of your parents as it is the car that is insured.
The driver and the adult passenger will need to have the permission from your parents to use the car you will be driving and adherence to this will not have a negative impact any claims made on the insurance unless you have an accident that is entirely your fault which may cause the insurance company to raise the rates of insurance your parents pay.
When you receive your driver’s license you will need to either be an additional named insured on your parent’s auto policy or you may secure an auto insurance policy on your own with a different insurance company than the one your parents use.
I suggest comparing the rates you would be paying with four auto insurance companies, one being The Hartford, another being Geico, another being Progressive Insurance, and the last being Mercury Insurance. You most likely will find the rates with either of the four to be less than the rate the insurance company your parents have were you to be listed as an additional driver on their policy.
The decision as to who will pay for your auto insurance is between you and your parents as your parents may decide you are a responsible person and they will pay the cost of your auto insurance. Your parents may want to teach you to be responsible and tell you that you will need to pay for your own auto insurance if you want to drive any of their cars. Were you to show responsibility to your parents they may respond by paying for your auto insurance. Were you to show irresponsibility your parents may respond by informing you that you will need to pay for your own auto insurance. Sometimes it is as simple as just showing your parents you are responsible for everything you do and they will see this and feel more at ease knowing you will drive responsibly. Remember driving is a privilege and not a right and that privilege can be taken from you.
