Renters Liability Insurance

Wondering if you really need renters liability insurance? You may want to read the following story sent by Mark H. from Orlando, Florida.

“It was my 32nd birthday and I decided to have a small party at home. I invited a dozen of my closest friends, bought a lot of beer and prepared some party snacks. The evening started great, everyone was having fun and I got some really funny presents.

Then all of a sudden, this girl Jane, my friend Rick’s new girlfriend, managed to spill her drink on the floor, slipped and fractured her wrists. That brought the party to an early end, she was taken to the emergency room and all the rest. I was of course a bit pissed off that she ruined my birthday but didn’t think much of it at the time.

Imagine my surprise when a week later I received a letter from her lawyer! I found out I was liable for her injuries, medical expenses, loss of income.. the lot! I checked with my landlord because I knew he had insurance but he told me he has the building insured and home content plus renters liability insurance is my own responsibility. Guess what? I didn’t have liability insurance at all. It was the first time I even heard about such a policy. I was on my own facing a 5 figure claim!

Needless to say, this is not a birthday party I’ll forget in a hurry. If you don’t have liability insurance, here is my advice to you. Don’t be a fool, get insured today!

Mark H.”

If you didn’t know that your landlord’s insurance doesn’t cover your personal belongings and that as a renter, you are liable for anyone injured in your property, than its probably a good think that you have read Mark’s story.
